Gluten Free Baking Necessities

The STAPLES of my pantry...

10/28/20225 min read

I suffered most of my childhood and adult life with on and off pain, among other symptoms. About three years ago, after countless doctor visits I decided to try an elimination diet cause nothing was helping or fixing my problems. Within a couple days I realized GLUTEN was the culprit for all my ailments and cut it out of my diet. Shortly after I realized my oldest was also a victim of being gluten intolerant....and then my youngest son as well.

Through the last few years we have tested and trialed numerous gluten free products and recipes to find the foods and baking that most closely resemble the things we loved before our "life changed." The products I have listed below are my favorite brands and products I NEED in my pantry at all times so I can make things on the fly....or when one of my kids gets a craving. I strive to have a kitchen where I don't have to run to the grocery store every time I want to whip something up, so its very rare for me to NOT have one of these products in my house. I love Bob's Red Mill products the best in case you couldn't tell ;-)

I have tried MANY baking flours on our gf journey and I can honestly say this one TOPS them all. It is the most versatile flour and if you only want ONE flour in your pantry, this one is a must and will allow you to do MOST things.

There is a 1:1 baking flour that can be found at Bulk Barn that is very similar to this one, but I find the price point isn't much different as this option with amazon.

This is another multipurpose flour that is top notch. If you are wanting to make the "chewy homemade chocolate chip cookie" that you always ate as a kid, then this flour will give you just that. Its a little more on the $$ side, but I've found amazon to be the best price. If you shop where presidents choice products can be found, the PC gluten free ALL Purpose Flour Blend will also work similar and is a little cheaper.

This is a product that is needed in MOST gluten free baking recipes. The 1:1 flours do have it in them, but I find adding a little extra of this definitely helps yield a better result for those kind of recipes where "rising" is involved...life muffins, banana bread, cupcakes, cookies, etc....

You don't need much so one bag lasts a long time.

Bobs Red Mill Almond Flour

I love a good almond flour. If I can find a recipe my kids love with the use of almond flour i'm ALL OVER IT. It adds a good dose of healthy fats which your kids NEED in their diet...and YOU as well. There is a lot of almond flours that are NOT fine enough, which results in your recipe turning out NOT near as good. This one yields the best results I have found, but there is always new brands coming out, so stay tuned!

In our house I'm pretty sure I use quick oats almost just as much as I use a baking flour. If you are celiac, this one is certified as GF and is a great option. I have bought it in the past, but with the rising costs of groceries I try and save where I can. I take the risk buying a non GF certified brand of oats. I have yet to see a reaction in myself or my boys from other brands I have bought, so I will continue to save a few bucks until then....

Robin Hood Quick Oats

This is the option we use in our house and have yet to see a reaction with any gluten contamination. That being said, if you are someone who needs to be 100% certain your products are GF, go with a certified brand like the one I posted above.

Every pantry needs a baking soda and this is the one thats always stocked in ours! I also go through it so fast I order three when I order.

Every pantry also needs some baking powder and this is always my go-to. Its inexpensive and can be found in every grocery store and amazon.

Hershey's Chipits Milk Chocolate Chips

I don't know if your kids insist on the milk chocolate...but mine definitely do. I can't ever trick them with the semi-sweet either, so these are the ones we always have on hand!
